Go The Extra Mile

Gasoline Alley Services (GAS) has over 115 sites across New Zealand. All outlets are 100 per cent New Zealand owned with the majority of petrol service stations independently owned and operated. The name is synonymous with personal and friendly service and its proud involvement in local communities throughout the country.

The purchase of the Mount Roskill GAS station has been a life changing decision for Gurjinder Singh and Damandeep Kaur and has allowed them the independence they have been working towards. Originally from India, the couple have called New Zealand home for the last 12 years and found that making the decision to veer away from their initial interests and invest in a petrol station was one of the biggest they have made so far.

After initially contacting ABC to invest on their experience in childcare and hospitality sectors they were introduced to Shaun Khanna: “We contacted ABC with a mindset of owning a café or a childcare centre, one thing we hadn’t considered is buying a business that had more potential than any other opportunities we had looked at.”

The couple from Pakuranga sought advice from a variety of sources, but found that Shaun became a trusted advisor throughout the buying process as well as providing direction in the technical steps involved in the investment: “Shaun is an expert and played a key role in our decision making. His combined experience and knowledge contributed to us making the right decision for us. He encouraged us and motivated us—we think that’s the right way of doing it.”

The couple decided to purchase the business within 10 days which was a  tough but record breaking decision for them. The challenge to build a lifestyle for themselves was key to buying the business. The systems integrated with GAS meant that the pair could jump into the business at any time to offer additional support and they could implement plans to effectively change the current operations of the petrol station.A quick decision, but one in which everything resonated and the pair could see themselves in control of: “We loved exploring different options, under our management we have changed the rules completely and is one reason why the business clicked with us”.

It is the sense of independence the couple had been looking for in their search to become Kiwi business owners. It meant the drive to work smarter, no set hours to adhere to and the time to support the changing needs of their family. “The path became clear as to where we needed to focus our interests and that we should be generating our own profit to build a lifestyle”.

Central to the decision to take over the site was undertaking renovations for the Mount Roskill petrol station: “Shaun provided a clear picture of how the petrol station worked making it evident from very early on that the site required renovation and would be an additional investment. We saw this as the first milestone as business owners to achieve”. The opportunity to buy, and then invest was the definitive choice to make a difference as operators and a step towards driving the site to achieve the first of many milestones.

Gurjinder’s advice is to talk to the experts. “We sought advice from a variety of sources with the goal to look for how we could make a difference”. The support of family and friends helped to build confidence in the buying decision and has paid off as they have achieved their second milestone in purchasing a second GAS station site with the direction of Shaun. “Our relationship with Shaun has been vital in achieving goals as business owners and will continue to grow as we look to invest in a third business with ABC”.
